Stay Fit & Fab When The Weather Turns Drab
I live in Ocean City, NJ for the summer and so far, we haven’t had one (completely) rainy day. This summer has been extraordinarily sunny and hot and beachy.
Today I woke up to a cloudy sky and the sound of rain on the roof. Ugh. Two hours later: still raining.
This gloomy weather is putting a particularly depressing thought into my head – summer is almost over.
For most people, the beginning of summer means the onset of dieting, exercising, and “healthy living.” Bikini (or board shorts) season gives people motivation to eat healthier and move more.
But just because summer is ending (ugh) doesn’t mean that you should forget your healthy habits. Sure, you will be forced to spend more time indoors and sleeping/comfort foods will seem especially appealing, but don’t let the fall and winter months put you into total hibernation mode.
Make it a point to maintain a healthy lifestyle during those colder, darker months that often trigger seasonal depression and weight gain.
Remember a few weeks before last Spring Break when you scrambled to introduce healthier eating and exercising habits into your lifestyle? That doesn’t have to happen again. If you uphold your dedication to healthy living throughout the fall and winter months, you won’t need to dramatically alter your routine when it comes time to shop for lighter, tighter, and more revealing clothes.
So make a pact with yourself. Maintain a healthy body and mind during the months when you just want to stay in and order in.
Dedicate a room in your house to some kind of movement –set up a yoga mat, some weights, and/or an elliptical machine. This will give you some space and time to rejuvenate and refresh your body and mind, which tend to get stale and stiff during these colder, darker months. (Check out Overstock.com for less home exercise equipment.)
Search for some nutritious fall and winter recipes –look for ways to “health-ify” the more substantial foods you crave during this time of the year when salads and fruit just don’t cut it. (Cooking Light has some quick and easy, hearty and healthy comfort food ideas.)
Okay, so now the sun is coming out. I guess we won’t be getting our first rainy day of the summer. Summer isn’t over yet, but when it is, don’t let the winter blahs take over.
What will you do to maintain a healthy lifestyle after beach season is over?

Ugh. I know exactly what you mean by this. It pretty much happens to me every winter, not to mention the whole seasonal depression thing. I swear, if I don't see enough green grass and sunshine, after awhile I get pretty darn bummed out.
But you're right, it's nice to think about that scramble to get fit before swimming season hits can be completely avoidable if we just stick with it through the winter. But why oh why do all the stuff-your-face-with-food holidays happen when we're shut indoors? I suppose the pilgrims worried more about starving to death then fitting into last summers shorts. But still! :P
@lucy_sky - pilgrims...so vain.
