5 Hour Energy…More Like Seven Minute Jitters
“How do you zap your 2:30 feeling?” You’ve all probably seen those 5 Hour Energy commercials that promise to lift you out of your mid- to late-afternoon slump and rejuvenate you (mentally and physically) for the rest of your day.
5 Hour Energy is a shot of caffeine (about one cup of coffee) and a bunch of B Vitamins. No sugar and only four calories. The commercials are very convincing – an office full of drowsy zombies is transformed into a group of enthusiastic workmen and women who are instantly amped to drown themselves in more paperwork.
The first time I tried 5 Hour Energy, I got a small case of the “happy jitters,” but they only lasted for seven to ten minutes. Then I felt nothing…except maybe a small headache.
I’m not sure if the energy shot just didn’t affect me because I’m an avid coffee drinker in the morning and I’ve become immune to caffeine boosts…or if they just don’t work in general.
I was talking to a family member last night and he swears by Snickers to lift you out of that “2:30 haze.” My sister swears by naps. I know a few people who would swear by Adderall, but that’s not a (healthy) option for everyone.
Our society definitely suffers from what I call “quick fix syndrome.” We all want to feel good and energized and we want to feel it now. But I’ve found that a lot of these “feel it now” products either don’t work or only provide you with short-lived jitters and an eventual crash.
What do you swear by (if anything) to perk you up when that 2:30 feeling hits?

Out of soda, energy drinks and coffee...
I'd say coffee delivers the best kick without the crash
